The history of Sicily is a millenary one, enriched since ancient times by the legacy of the diverse civilisations that still reverberates in the architecture, arts, crafts and cultural heritage visible and palpable in modern days. It is for these reasons that journeying through Sicily means looking at the very roots of the Mediterranean history. Welcome to Sicily!
Palermo, Catania, Messina, Agrigento, Trapani, Syracuse, Ragusa, Caltanisetta and Enna represent the nine provinces of Sicily. Each one of these provinces includes within its geographical bounds tens of small municipalities, which in turn are represented by tens of ancient small towns and medieval quarters. Like a kaleidoscope the mosaic of civil and rural dwellings and natural habitats offers a manifold of views, impressions and historical snippets and relics of life to those willing to discover them. Welcome to the history of Sicily!
Sicily is an Island. As all the islands, it has a peculiar identity, both about the territory and the traditions. Our land offers sea and mountains, hills and rivers, rocky and sandy beaches, locations that have always attracted European and International people. The several dominations made the Sicilian people become, in their archetype, sometimes suspicious in the relationship with the strangers, but it's just on the surface. On the other hand, the original Sicilian is a very generous person with the ones who are sincere and available with him. Ask for information and they will bring you where you want! Have a seat and you will get up full of attention and delicious natural food! And...be careful: do not leave anything in your dish!!
Because of its diverse range of environments, the Sicilian territory is able to provide a habitat to a surprisingly varied number of ecosystems. In particular, the Park of Etna offer us the chance to come across and observe particular endemic species of wild animals, now accustomed to people, that would normally shy away from human presence. The preservation of natural habitats and of its biodiversity in Sicily in general and of the natural Parks of Etna and of the Nebrodi Mountains in particular, has from many years now been fostered by many public and political initiatives. And it is thanks to these concerted efforts that many animal species of insects and plants some of which were on the brink of extinction have started to thrive once again.
The Sicilian territory offers a variety of diverse geophysical environments that offer the chance and possibility of practicing lots of different types of sportive and recreational activities. Trekking or mountain-biking on the declivities and volcanic surfaces or amidst the luscious wilderness of either Etna Park or of the Nebrodi Mountains, Canoeing & Canyoning through rivers, free-climbing, bird-watching; these are just but few examples of the possibility offered by the amazing diversity of the Sicilian landscapes. A love of nature and a passion for outdoor activities are the only requisites you may need to enjoy the natural habitats of Sicily.
