A superb whole-day Tour featuring visits to and explorations of stunning locations that, from the splendour of the Ionic coastline to the lunar-like terrain and awe-inspiring sight of the volcanic craters of Mount Etna to the suggestive views of the Alcantara Gorges will enable you to piece together the various historical stages that have shaped the present-day environment.

The tour include the provision of a safe and comfortable all-terrain 4x4 Jeep, a delicious and abundant lunch prepared with the foods and the earthy flavours typical of the Sicilian cuisine, trekking tailored to be suitable for any fitness level and age, even in the presence of snow, thanks to the snowshoes provided by us.

PROGRAMME

• Pick-up from your holiday residence
• A brief but intriguing overview of the Ionic shores and the bays of Aci Castello and Acitrezza for a chance to appreciate the geological phenomena from which Etna originated.
• Start of the ascent to the highest reachable part, by car, of Mount Etna, during which it will be possible to observe the past lava relics of the massive lava flow that, as a result of the 1991 – 1993 eruption, overflew the ‘Calanna’ valley and threatened to destroy the dwellings of the town of Zafferana Etnea.
• A pleasurable and stimulating walk or ‘Ciaspolata’ (basically snowshoeing) depending on presence or absence of snow, during which it is possible to come across and observe ancient and recently-formed craters and other fascinating volcanic features unique to the place all the while breathing the purest, crystal-clear air and observing the whole Ionic coastline from above.
• Descent from the summit, during which time it will be possible to see enjoy more beautiful wilderness, look at thought-provoking images of the cataclysmic effects of lava flowing on some rural dwellings and take some more awesome pictures.
• A stop at a cosy restaurant to enjoy a delicious meal characterised by, earthy flavours, wholesome Sicilian foods and heart-warming red wine typical of the Etna area.
• Trip to the fluvial park of the Alcantara to admire the breathtaking scenario of the gorges and canyon that formed about 30,000 years ago and that surround a small fluvial island.
• Return and drop-off at your holiday residence.
